The voyage’s success was a worldwide event and made Thor Heyerdahl a household name. On August 7, after 101 days and 6900 km (4,300 miles), the Ton-Kiki raft hit a reef at Raroia in the Tuamotu Islands, 1947. ![]() Their destination was ‘the other side’ of the Pacific Ocean and their driving force was Thor’s belief that ancient races knew how to sail the oceans. On 28th April 1947, Thor and his crew of five left the coast of Peru on a simple raft made of balsa. When it comes to epic sailing adventures our thoughts always turn to the Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl, especially as 2017 marks the 70th anniversary of his Kon-Tiki expedition. ![]()
